The Dhampir Vampire Hunters

The same culture that spawned the dhampir legends, those of the Balkans, as well as others, are also firm believers that they were capable of destroying vampires as well. Why would the dhampir be only interested in killing vampires? Naturally, for revenge, for their mothers, who were usually raped or seduced into the union with the vampire. Or in feeling remorse for their human side, who are prey for the vampire side of them, which comes from the father. Other reasons for revenge could be for their appearance; dhampirs in folklore were not known for their good looks. Actually quite the opposite. Bulgarian legends recognize dhampir as being hideous, deformed creatures.

The dhampir were also said to have the incredible powers of seeing vampires, even if invisible. Also, speed, agility, and strength, which made them more than equipped to kill vampires. The methods the dhampir would use could range anywhere from driving a wooden stake through its heart, shooting it, or performing a specific ritual over the grave of the vampire. The dhampir would touch lead crowns to the grave, and this would vanquish the evil spirit that inhabited the corpse.

“Performers” better known as fakes and liars, used to travel the Carpathian mountains, and “sniff out” vampires in a village. They’d check for recent death, or attribute a village or town’s bad luck or illnesses to the presence of a vampire. These self-appointed dhampir vampire hunters would then profess to being able to see an invisible vampire. After they had instilled fear and suspicion among the villagers, they would then profess to have the power to command a vampire to leave, or take other actions, such as driving a hawthorn stake through a corpse’s heart whom they claimed was the vampire. The main reason for this is that dhampir were always paid well for their services, of course.
