The Daywalkers: Dhampir And Powerful Vampires

One of the most popular beliefs about the dhampir is that they are born with an immunity to sunlight, which according to vampire lore, is fatal to most of their species. This is actually a media born rule, according to some sources, direct sunlight as being fatal to vampires in historic lore was not widely believed. Daylight causing injury or death to a vampire was supposedly a piece of legend spread by the film ‘Nosferatu’, in which Graf Orlock is dissolved by the sun. The “daywalker” term was coined by Marvel in their Blade comics, and then widely spread with the films.

Dhampir, whether the sun was or was not a lethal force to vampires, may walk in sunlight. Also, many other powerful vampires are also able to walk in the day in the media or popular literature. As an example, the lead character, Count Kinkell from Tsukuyomi is able to walk in daylight, because he bends shadows and light around himself. The daywalker term does not specifically only apply to dhampir, as well because not all dhampir were able to walk in daylight; at least in fiction. Other sources say that dhampir can be born instead with all of the weakness of a vampire, and none of its strengths.

A daywalker can also be born from two vampires, in fiction. Not quite a dhampir, because the father was in possession of a human soul, but still himself a vampire. I’m sure you can guess the source; Angel, the continuation of the Buffy, The Vampire Slayer series. Connor, also known as Connor Angel, Steven Franklin Thomas Holtz and Connor Reilly is the spawn of Angel and Darla; Darla kills herself with a wooden stake so that the baby can be born unscathed. Connor has the ability to walk in daylight, eat normal food, as well as speed, agility, and strength of his vampire father. He can still be pierced, however, although he still heals quickly.
